I’ve been invited to speak at the Ready for Life event in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, on 7 October, hosted by the Central Provident Fund Board (CPF).
The topic?
Retirement.
The way I view retirement has changed over the years. You see, I used to think of retirement as the finish line. Study hard, work harder, and then one day, at 65 years old, you’re free.
It was a linear path, with freedom as the endgame.
However, as I was moving through the system, executing my carefully constructed plan to achieve the freedom that comes with retirement, I noticed something wasn’t right.
Those who are decades ahead of me, slogging away, doing well financially, weren’t very satisfied.
They often wish they had done something differently when they were young. And the honest truth is, I think they still have what it takes to do things differently. But something else was holding them back.
While it’s dangerous to be underprepared for retirement, learning you don’t have enough at old age, it’s equally hazardous to be overprepared, only to find out you lived an underwhelming life.
If you are reading this, it’s likely that you fall into the latter category, and the reasons for this are generally threefold:
Firstly, many people think we should work until we are old and unproductive to build a large nest egg. They put financial compensation above everything else.
Secondly, they didn’t calculate how much they needed. They kept grinding away, paralyzed by their financial goals, forgetting that their ultimate goal was to live a rich life, not die rich.
Thirdly, they didn’t know how to make their money work, which is why they leaned on active income as their only source of income, and did not build up passive income engines.
My talk will cover how to calculate how much you need for retirement, how stocks can complement your CPF savings, and how we should view retirement.
You can register for free, but there are a limited number of slots available. Sign up to hear me speak with two other panellists at the 12.45pm main track event: Building a Strong Foundation for Retirement Success.
See you there.
