I turned 33 today.

No, I do not have 33 lessons for you.

That’s probably 32 lessons too many.

I only have 1 for you.

My perspective has only recently changed, and I wish I had started in my early twenties.

Wear sunscreen.

Whether it’s raining, cloudy, or sunny, always wear sunscreen.

Why?

It is normal to age, it is beautiful, and it is a normal part of life.

But you don’t have to look like a dried prune as part of this process.

Educating people professionally for more than two years has taught me this, where you can show, don’t tell.

So I’m going to show you why.

Meet Bill McElligott, the man who has had sun exposure on one side of his face for 28 years.

Now I have your attention?

Good.

How much sunscreen to use?

Two fingers worth.

How often do you apply?

Every 2 hours.

How much SPF is enough?

At least SPF 30, anything more than SPF 50 is a marketing gimmick.

Are you a nerd like me?

Then buckle up, because I’m going to explain the science to you like a dermatologist.

Just kidding, I’m not a healthcare professional.

This is the ramblings of a nerd trying to age well.

We all know that UV rays cause skin cancer.

What’s lesser known is the damage it does to our body’s collagen.

Collagen is a protein that constitutes 25% to 35% of your body.

It functions like glue, holding cells together and giving skin balance and elasticity.

We have them in our skin, bones, tendons, cartilage, blood vessels, joints, and eyes.

Most people start noticing its decline in their late 30s and early 40s.

But the truth?

The decline of collagen begins in the mid-20s.

And sun exposure causes collagen to break down, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin.

Bonus fact: Alcohol and smoking accelerate collagen loss.

So if you don’t want to look like a dried prune, use sunscreen.

You might like how I explain things to you, giving you both the why and what, making it refreshingly different from your professors who put you to sleep in school…

If so, you might like the way I teach investing.
